After years of having my systray icons disappear and playing with very limited success with msconfig, disabling services and re-installing apps and numerous rebuilds……. I was experiencing this issue and no one (most notably, no one at Microsoft) seemed to know, or care, about the issue. You might like to know that to completely solve the problem, I combined two methods. Also some icons for pictures and videos will actually load but then never show a thumbnail preview of the media like they are supposed to. Since the Windows Media Player network sharing service depends on the UPnP service, it also gets stopped, so if you need that, you cannot use this workaround. If you enabled "Show Volume Control in Taskbar" from multimedia settings, it was back again, but just for the session. Tracked this one down myself as it had me pulling my hair out. Reboot just for good measure.

(2) Then I used the (fantastic) tool by Cliff Cawley "Startup Delayer" (http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?show=startdelay) to put delays in for "non essential" Some of the missing or disappearing icons will still not appear if delayed, or they will never appear when delayed. weblink Startup Delayer seems to work well with the SoundMan icon though (the speaker symbol to control the sound volume) and with several others, like Asus Probe.
