It does seem to be a problem with the way the card is seeded into the main board. If possible, connect the speakers to play from another known-working source in order to test that they still operate properly. I think you have the same problem as that poster - NOT a dirty volume control, but a flaky connection somewhere. It has to do with something else within the system, being either the speaker wires and/or receiver/amplifier.

So, open for some more suggestions. There doesn't seem to be anything in particular that triggers the problem but it is persistent.
